Description

The Old Manor House is a house, originally dating back to the 14th century, which was remodelled in the 17th century and extensively altered in 1863. It is now divided into two properties. The house is constructed of coursed limestone and ironstone rubble, with a banded appearance on the right-hand side. It features ashlar quoins and dressings, and a 20th-century concrete tiled roof with raised stone coped gables and two moulded gable and off-centre ridge stacks. The façade has an irregular six-bay arrangement and two storeys with attics. A 19th-century door, marked with the date stone “IAH 1863” on a shield shaped plaque with a hood mould, is positioned on the left, flanked by single three-light casement windows with relieving arches. A further 19th-century door is located to the right, with a small 19th-century fixed light window beyond. All ground floor openings have deep ashlar lintels. The first floor features a single two-light casement and one three-light casement. A small, square, blocked 17th-century window is found to the extreme right. Two 19th-century gabled dormers with two-light casements are present in the roof. Inside, a potentially repositioned 14th-century deep niche with a cusped trefoil head, which may have been a piscina, is visible. The back wall of this niche has a prominent batter on the inner face. The site was formerly the location of a monastic grange.
