Description
Penny Hill Farmhouse is a house dating from around 1680, with later alterations in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick and features slate roofs with brick coped gables, dogtooth eaves, two gable stacks, and a large ridge stack with three tall angle shafts. The building has two storeys and a garret, with a battered south wing.
The south front has three bays and a high plinth. To the right, there is a doorway with a 20th-century gabled hood supported by slender columns, leading to a plank door. This doorway is flanked by two single two-light casements, with two similar windows above, all featuring leaded lights. The left gable wall includes a 20th-century four-light casement, with a three-light casement above and a slightly smaller three-light casement in the garret; all have leaded lights, with the garret window adorned with a brick moulded floating pediment and a small moulded brick oculus in the apex.
At the rear, there is a two-bay wing of two storeys with an attic, which retains a partially intact plinth and a first-floor flat band. The right side has a doorway with a plank door, and to the left is a four-light 20th-century casement with leaded lights and a segmental relieving arch. Above, there is a three-light 20th-century casement, also with leaded lights. The roof features two 20th-century gabled dormers with glazing bar sashes. Projecting to the left is a late 18th-century two-storey bay with a single three-light casement with leaded lights on each storey. Beyond this is a single-storey, two-bay wing with two-light and single-light casements, both with leaded lights.
