Description

The String of Horses is an early 19th-century public house, with later 19th-century additions. It is constructed of colourwashed brick, with a slate roof, wooden eaves, and single ridge and right gable stacks. The main block is six bays wide, with a central doorway set within a pilastered doorcase featuring an entablature and cornice, and incorporating partially glazed, panelled double doors. To the right are two glazing bar sash windows, and to the left a larger, single glazing bar sash window, with a doorway beyond. This doorway has a flush wedge lintel, an overlight, and a partially glazed panelled door. A small carriage archway is located beyond the doorway, featuring a basket arch, a blind overlight, a painted archivolt, and double plank doors. Five glazing bar sash windows are present above the ground floor. All windows have painted flush wedge lintels. The first floor has five glazing bar sash windows. Attached to the right is a late 19th-century, two-storey, two-bay extension with wooden dentillated eaves. This extension features a large carriage archway with a flat arch, with two plain sash windows above, each with a flush wedge lintel and keystone.
