Description

South Lodge with attached wall and gateway is a lodge cottage dating from the mid-19th century, likely designed by H.E. Kendall for the Whichcote family of Aswarby Park. The building is constructed of coursed and random limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings. It has Collyweston slate roofs with raised stone coped gables, hollow chamfered kneelers, and two pairs of octagonal ashlar wall stacks with moulded cornices.

The lodge has a T-plan and stands two storeys high with an irregular four-bay front. The right-hand two bays are advanced and have separate gables. The central entrance features a planked and studded door set within a moulded Tudor arched surround, topped with a hollow chamfered hood, and is enclosed by a gabled porch that includes a Tudor arched sidelight with sunk spandrels. To the left of the door is a single four-centred arched light, while to the right are two pairs of matching windows, separated by a blank shield-shaped panel beneath a common moulded hood. On the first floor, there is another pair of windows with a moulded hood. All windows are casements with stepped and chamfered ashlar surrounds.

On the left side of the lodge, there is a three-light window on the ground floor and a two-light window on the first floor, both featuring moulded hoods and lozenge stops. Attached to the left side of the lodge is a low wall with ashlar copings and square stepped pyramidal piers, which supports a pair of wrought iron gates with plain uprights and spiral embellishments.
