Description

Jew's House is a Grade I listed building located at 1 Steep Hill in Lincoln. Originally constructed around 1170, it features a first-floor hall with shops below, and is currently used as a restaurant and salon. The building has undergone alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries and is made of dressed stone and brick, topped with a pantile roof and two 18th-century brick gable stacks.

The exterior showcases a moulded sill band and an enriched impost band at the first floor. It stands two storeys plus attics and has three bays. The off-centre doorway, dating from the 12th century, is adorned with interlace ornament and stiff-leaf capitals, although the shafts are missing. To the left, there is an early 19th-century wooden shopfront in an altered opening, featuring a central half-glazed door flanked by single glazing bar bay windows with shutters, all under a moulded cornice. To the right, a 19th-century half-glazed door with an overlight is accompanied by a glazing bar shop window with a hood, also set in an altered opening. Above these, there are two altered 12th-century two-light windows with heavily moulded heads, one of which retains the remains of its shafts. Each window now has an 18th-century glazing bar sash, with a similar sash in the centre. Above, to the right, there is a segment-headed dormer with a 20th-century casement.

Inside, the rear wall features a 12th-century chamfered doorway with imposts, while the north wall has a restored chamfered segment-headed recess on each floor. This building is an exceptionally important example of 12th-century domestic architecture, with Lincolnshire being home to most of the surviving examples.
