Description

8 and 9 The Strait are two houses that have been converted into a restaurant. They date from the 17th century and early 19th century, with later alterations from the late 19th century and 20th century. The buildings are constructed of stone, with a brick front that is mostly rendered and pebbledashed, and they are whitewashed. The roof is covered with plain tiles and features two brick gable stacks, along with wooden gutters.

The structure has two storeys plus attics and consists of two bays. On the left side, there is a 20th-century half-glazed door, which is flanked on the right by a shop window that has wooden mullions, transoms, and a cornice. To the right of this is a larger shop window with glazing bars, pilasters, and a cornice, which is flanked on the left by a blocked doorway and on the right by another 20th-century door. Above the shop windows, there is a canted wooden oriel window from the mid-19th century on the left, and to the right, a three-light sliding sash window. Further up, there are two segment-headed dormers, with a sliding sash window on the left and a casement window on the right.

Inside, to the north, there is a large 17th-century ashlar fireplace that has been restored, featuring a wooden bressumer and an 18th-century brick hood. There is also an 18th-century brick chimney to the south. The roof has mostly been renewed in the late 20th century.
