Description
12 and 13 The Strait are two houses that now function as a gallery and a shop. They were built in the mid-18th century, with some alterations made in the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed of brick, which is partly painted, and feature a concrete tile roof with a central gable stack. They are two storeys tall, plus attics, and have two bays.
On the left side, there is a moulded wooden shopfront from the mid-19th century, which includes pilasters, a half-glazed door with an overlight, and a 6-pane shop window, all beneath a corniced fascia. The right side has a simpler wooden shopfront from the late 19th century, also with pilasters, a single window, and a 20th-century door, all under a corniced fascia. Above the shopfronts, there is a 19th-century bracket lamp and two segment-headed glazing bar sashes. Higher up, there are two segment-headed dormers with renewed sliding sashes.
Inside, the buildings feature 18th-century spine beams, a softwood winder stair, and an early 19th-century hob grate, along with a stud partition wall.
