Description
26 and 27 Steep Hill are two houses that have been converted into shops. They date from the early to mid 18th century, with some alterations made in the mid 19th century. The buildings incorporate part of the City wall and the south gate of the Roman Colonia in their south wall. They are constructed of brick, partly colourwashed, with stone dressings and roofs made of plain tiles and pantiles, featuring a gable stack. The buildings have a rendered plinth, a first-floor band on the left, and a sill band on the right.
The structure consists of three storeys on the left and two storeys plus attics on the right, with a total of three bays. On the left, there is a 19th-century shop window with glazing bars and a cornice, next to a half-glazed door with an overlight. To the right, there is an altered mid-19th-century shop window with a cornice, followed by a late 19th-century door. Above the shop windows, on the left, is a mid-19th-century square wooden oriel window with plain sashes, and to the right are two glazing bar sashes. Higher up, there are two small plain sashes on the left and two segment-headed dormers with sliding sashes on the right. The interior has not been inspected.
