Description
No. 25 Steep Hill is a house that now functions as both a residence and a shop. It incorporates part of the City wall and the south gate of the upper section of the Roman Colonia. The building dates from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a slate roof featuring two gable stacks. The eaves cornice is moulded. The structure has three storeys and two bays.
On the right side, there is a pilastered doorcase with foliated consoles, a dentilled open pediment, and a 19th-century half-glazed door with a fanlight. To the left, there is an early 19th-century shop window adorned with pilasters and a cornice, along with a cellar light below it. Above the shop window, there are two single-light Venetian windows, and further up, a 20th-century glazing bar casement is flanked by single dummy windows.
Inside, the building features an 18th-century winder stair, which has been partially renewed, along with 20th-century shop fittings that match the overall style of the interior.
