Description

Two houses at 43 and 44 Steep Hill date from the mid-18th century and later 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. They are constructed of brick, with a partly rendered and painted ground floor, and have gabled and hipped pantile roofs featuring single ridge and gable stacks.

Number 44 has rebated eaves and a coped gable. It is three storeys plus attics and has a three-bay front. Number 43, to the left, has a two-bay front with two mid-19th century wooden shopfronts featuring pilasters and single windows with cornices; the right-hand shopfront has panelled shutters. To the left of the shopfront is a moulded doorcase with a recessed half-glazed door, and to the right is a plain sash window. Above the shopfront are two glazing bar sashes, and above again, a smaller casement and a glazing bar sash, all with segmental heads.

Number 44 has a wooden shopfront with pilasters and a cross-mullioned window with a cornice. To its left is a half-glazed door with an overlight, set in a moulded surround. Above the door is a central glazing bar sash with a rubbed brick head, above which is a blank panel, and above that, an off-centre segmental-headed dormer. The interior has not been inspected.
