Description

The Old College, located behind Number 3 Market Place, is a former college that was later converted into a brewery and stores, and is now a ruin that was restored in the 20th century. It was founded by Ralph, Lord Cromwell, around 1440. The building is constructed of red brick in English bond with ashlar dressings and has an irregular three-bay front over two stories. The off-centre 20th-century planked door is set within a 15th-century chamfered ashlar four-centred arched doorway. To the left of this doorway is a blocked opening, and beyond it is a small four-centred arched light. On the first floor, there is a window with moulded ashlar reveals, which has been later converted into a doorway, along with two further openings. The Old College is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is held in guardianship by English Heritage.
