Description

This is a plaque from 1803 that was moved to its current location in 1970. It is made of cast iron and is set in a modern brick surround. The tall plaque has a semicircular head and features a raised crown beneath a swag of grapes, above an anchor. The date 1803 is flanked by the inscription "W. Holden Tavern" below. Originally, the plaque was fixed to the side wall of the Crown and Anchor Public House, which was located on this site until it was demolished in 1968. The plaque was cast at Howden's foundry in Witham Town, Boston.
