Description

The Swing Bridge, located on London Road in Boston, is a Grade II listed structure built between 1882 and 1884 by Handysides the Derby Ironfounders. This swing bridge was designed for the docks railway and features segmental panelled iron sides with a central circular pier, all set on a timber piled platform. It operates hydraulically from a control cabin on the west bank, with manual control available at the center of the bridge.

Historically, the bridge was constructed to connect the docks' single track railway to the Great Northern Line, facilitating the crossing over the Haven when the docks were created in 1884. The bridge was prefabricated and arrived in Boston in a partly assembled state in November 1882, with the dock officially opening on December 15, 1884.
