Description
No. 4 London Road is a house dating from the early 18th century, which was altered and refronted in the early 19th century. It is constructed of red-brown brick with stucco, featuring a slate roof with stone-coped gables and stock brick gable stacks. The building has overhanging eaves supported by paired brackets.
The exterior consists of three storeys and a three-bay front. The entrance is off-centre, featuring a six-panel door with a radiating fanlight, flanked by moulded pilasters and panelled reveals. On either side of the door are single canted bay windows, each with three glazing bar sashes and carved pilasters. The lead roof covers the two bay windows and the door. On the first floor, there is a tall central glazing bar sash, which originally opened to a now-removed balcony, flanked by two smaller similar windows. The second floor has three small glazing bar sashes. The early 18th-century brickwork and openings of the rear wing can be seen from Stells Lane.
Inside, the house retains a stick baluster staircase with a swept handrail, which is lit by a tall semicircular headed window at the rear. The interior also features contemporary panelled doors and fire surrounds.
