Description
31 Market Street is a house that was a public house at the time of listing. It dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed but now has a plaster exterior with painted half-timbering. It features a plain tiled roof that slightly overhangs the first-floor windows on both sides, with a gabled return wing on the right. There are ridge stacks in the center and at the left end, with a stack behind the ridge at the right end. The structure is L-shaped with a crosswing to the right and has two storeys. The windows are arranged irregularly, with four on the first floor and three on the ground floor, plus additional windows in the re-entrant angle of the crosswing. The ground floor has 19th-century casements in small canted bays to the left and right of the center. To the left of center, there is a very wide panelled door topped with a flat cornice-hood supported by brackets.
