Description

The Tree Public House is a public house that dates from the late 16th century or 17th century, with extensions and alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building features a timber frame on the ground floor, which is made of brick and covered with roughcast, and has been extended in red brick that is colourwashed. It has tiled roofs and is designed in an L shape with three bays and two bays. The structure is two storeys high and has bracketed hoods over the entrances located in the inner angle of the L, which contain 19th-century casements and sashes.

The left gable end facing the road includes plat bands, a small blind window, and an extruded stack at the rear that was rebuilt in the 19th century and features an oversailing cap. A 19th-century addition at the rear has a panelled door with a bracketed hood, a ground floor three-light segmental headed window, and a first-floor two-light window, all beneath a hipped roof. The gable end of the original wing to the right has a nine-pane sash window on the ground floor and a two-light casement on the first floor, with exposed plates and purlins. There is a continuous outshut at the rear that includes a large 17th-century stack with a 19th-century cap, as well as a weatherboarded outbuilding on the gable end and additional 19th-century lean-to structures.

Inside, the ground floor features a stop-chamfered binding beam, and the original stack between the two right bays of the left range has been truncated, although a large chimney breast remains. The interior also displays exposed posts, cambered tie beams, and queen struts that clasp the purlins.
