Description
Barkby Grange Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in 1855, showcasing polychrome brickwork with stone dressings and a Welsh slate roof. It is designed in a flamboyant picturesque Gothic style and is two storeys high, square in plan with a central light well, featuring distinct facades on each side.
The entrance front has two bays, highlighted by a central doorway beneath a gabled full-height porch that is corbelled out at the first floor level. The doorway features a four-centred arch within a chamfered and carved architrave. Above the doorway, there is a single two-light store mullioned window with a hoodmould, and a datestone in the apex. The left bay contains three mullioned lights with a blue and yellow brick relieving arch above, along with polychrome decoration in the tympanum. The right bay has two mullioned lancets, with two-light windows above and a gable over the left bay that displays patterning in the apex.
The west elevation features two coped gables with a small gablet between them, each with an expressed chimney stack. There are two-light windows in the center and single lights in the left-hand gable. The east elevation consists of three bays, with a tall coped gable on the left and a lower one on the right. The left gable has a three-light stone mullioned window on the ground floor and two lights above, adorned with polychrome patterning in the gable apex. The central bay also has a mullioned window on each floor, as does the right-hand gable. The building is accented with yellow brick quoins at the angles and blue and yellow brick bands, along with stone coped gables and ornate tall brick stacks.
