Description
Barkby Hall is a hall built around 1810, featuring a cement-rendered exterior over brick. The building stands three stories high and has eight bays, with a central ashlar porch that includes a door flanked by sash windows, pilasters, and an entablature. Above the porch is a balustrade displaying the shield of the Pochin family arms in a panel. The outer sash windows are complemented by a cornice and a blocking course that emphasizes the center. At one end, there is a one-story wing with a canted bay window and a parapet. The south elevation mirrors this design but consists of seven bays.
Inside, the hall showcases many features typical of the Regency style, including chimney pieces in the dining room, drawing room, and library, with the library's chimney piece inlaid with Blue John. The main staircase, designed in the style of Wyatt, is particularly grand; it rises from the center of the hall and splits into two flights that ascend along the side walls. The staircase has ornate metal balustrading with a trellis pattern and chain link swags beneath the handrail, along with a four-sided top light featuring semi-circular windows and a domed ceiling.
Barkby Hall has been owned by the Pochin family since 1604.
