Description
This is a barn located 50 metres east of Cosby House, dating from the late 16th century, with alterations made in 1766, as well as in the late 18th century, 19th century, and 20th century. The barn features timber close studding and box framing, with a rubble and brick plinth, brick nogging, and a slate roof. It consists of five bays, with a frame that includes a mid rail and diagonal braces. Many of the lower panels and the east gable have had their studding replaced with brick.
On the north side, there is a slightly off-centre pair of plank barn doors, flanked by small brick buttresses, with cross breathers in the lower panels beyond. The south side has a cut down pair of similar doors, with a late 20th century weatherboarded panel above them, and to the left, there is a plank door. Above this door, to the left, is a fragment of wattle and daub nogging. The east gable displays the date 1766 in burnt headers, along with three breathers above it. Inside, the barn has jowled posts with mortices that suggest a double strutted span beam at mid rail level. The roof is low pitched with principal rafters, where the main timbers are doubled and 19th century queen post trusses have been inserted, along with single purlins and a 20th century ridge piece.
