Description

No. 4 Chapel Lane is a house with an adjoining workshop, now converted into a house. It dates from the late 17th century and 19th century, with restoration completed in 1987. The building features a combination of brick and timber framing with brick nogging and thatched roofs, and it has a blue brick plinth. There are two restored coped gables and both a single corner and single gable brick stack.

The south front has a slightly off-centre panelled 19th-century door with a chamfered lintel, flanked by single three-light sliding sash windows with segmental heads. To the right is the former workshop, which has a 20th-century three-light casement window, and beyond that is a 19th-century close boarded door. The box-framed rear wall includes a central 20th-century door, with a small casement window to the left, and a two-light casement window to the right, followed by another small casement.

On the left side, the workshop features a three-light casement, and to the right is a beaded plank door. The rough cast west gable has a centrally located 20th-century casement on each floor, with the upper one having a segmental head. The east gable has a small fixed light to the right, and above that, a small 20th-century casement. Inside, the eastern section has a stud wall with wattle and daub nogging and two plank doors, one of which leads to an early 19th-century winder stair with a square newel and stick balusters. The roof features curved principal rafters and re-used collars, while the remaining rooms have chamfered span beams and three plank doors.
