Description
This building is a barn located approximately 30 metres north-east of Hall Farm Cottage. It dates from the 16th to 17th century and features a timber frame with 18th century brick casing and later alterations. The barn has internal timber framing, brick walls, and a pantile roof. It consists of five bays of frame with an aisle to the north.
On the south front, there are two 19th to 20th century buttresses, a central stable door under a segmental arch, two blocked diamond-shaped breathers, and a plain hatch door to the left, with a 20th century casement window to the right. A timber wall-plate, likely a former aisle-plate, is visible at the eaves. The right return, facing the road, features an inserted 19th century hatch and a 19th century raking dentilled brick cornice. There is a central entrance at the rear.
Inside, there is an arcade of four posts on 20th century concrete bases, with long braces to the tie beams and shorter braces to the aisle-plate. The end posts have been replaced by brick gable-ends, the south aisle has been removed, and the arcade has been underbuilt. The oak coupled rafter roof has pegged principals with trenched purlins and later raking struts to the tie-beams in the three central bays, along with later clasped purlins in the end bays. Three of the four tie-beams, the two eastern posts, and sections of the arcade plate are reused, and the joinery is relatively crude, indicating a date late in the timber-frame tradition. This barn is a rare and interesting survival.
