Description

WALSALL MB OLD HALL LANE (off) SP 09 NE Great Barr 8/84 Barn approximately 20 metres north of 11.08.51 Old Hall Farmhouse GV II

Barn. Probably mid-C19 and c1800, with remains of timber-frame, probably C17. Brick with tile roof. The right-hand part of the south wall appears to be earlier and is in Flemish bond. It has four windows irregularly spaced, a door at the left, a pitching hole under the eaves, and several blocked open- ings. The left-hand part is in English bond and has two windows, the left- hand one in a blocked doorway. On the north side some worn timber-framing is exposed at the left, with widely-spaced studs above a rail and with only principal posts remaining below. Interior: much altered, but ground floor ceiling appears to be raised, with chamfered main beams and with the rail cogged for joists at a lower level. Upper floor not fully accessible, but appears to be of seven bays, with straight wind-braces. One formerly closed truss has a series of vertical struts below the collar. Other trusses visible appear to have both straight and raking struts.
