Description
Walsall Lodge, also known as Merrion's Lodge, is a Grade II listed building dating from 1854, attributed to the architect George Gilbert Scott. This single-storey lodge, which serves as the entrance to Great Barr Hall, is constructed of rendered brick with some sandstone dressings and features a tiled roof.
The north-west front has a gable on the left side, beneath which is a canted bay window with a tiled roof, containing three lights at the front and one on each side. The stone gutter has carved figures at the corners, and above it is a narrow opening with a sandstone band inscribed with "MDCCCLIIII". To the right, there is a single bay with a two-light window, and a chimney is located to its left. The gables are coped, and set back to the left is a wing with a gable facing north-east towards the drive, which includes a three-light window and a chimney on the left-hand wall.
In the angle between the front part of the lodge and the wing, there is a single-storey gabled timber porch with carved bargeboards. An old photograph shows that before the building was rendered, it displayed polychrome brickwork in a diaper pattern. George Gilbert Scott was a personal friend of the Scott family of Great Barr Hall and is known to have worked on the estate.
