Description
The Pinfold is a house that likely dates from the early 17th century and was altered in the mid-20th century. It features a mix of timber-framing and brick, with a rendered finish, and is designed in an L-plan. The building has two storeys with an attic and consists of three bays. The facade now includes 4-light 20th-century mullioned windows with stucco hoods. The central bay features a timber oriel above the entrance door, and clasping pilaster strips cover the corner posts. A chimney is positioned behind the ridge, aligned with the door.
Inside, the outer bays on the ground floor contain rooms with chamfered axial beams; the left room has exposed chamfered common joists and both rooms have 20th-century brick fireplaces. The right room features a depressed-ogee doorhead in the wall to the left of the fireplace, though its lack of pegging suggests it may not be in its original position. The rear wing contains a chamfered ox-tongue stopped main beam. The framing of the rear wall of the front range is visible in a loft above a lean-to addition at the angle between the rear wing and this range, consisting of square panels with straight tension braces.
The entrance lobby in the middle bay has a 17th-century open-well stair with turned balusters and pendant bosses, which has been partly altered. On the first floor, the jowled principal posts of the two central tie-beam trusses are visible, and the ceiling joists are exposed. In the attic, the trusses feature raking struts, and some straight wind-braces are also exposed.
