Description

Grange Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th to early 18th century, likely with earlier origins. It underwent alterations and an extension in the 18th century, with additional extensions added to the rear in the late 19th to early 20th century. The bay windows were rebuilt and the roof re-tiled around 1982. The building is constructed of brick, rendered except for the left gable end, and features a pantile roof. It has an L-shaped plan, consisting of an earlier three-room range with side and rear extensions and a rear outshut. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has three first-floor windows, with a lower two-storey extension set back to the right.

The exterior includes a plinth and rusticated quoins on the main range. The entrance is located to the left of centre and features a doorcase with reeded pilasters and frieze, a moulded flat hood supported by ornate wrought iron scrolled brackets, a six-fielded-and-beaded-panel door beneath a moulded cornice, and a four-pane overlight in a panelled reveal. There are single flat-roofed canted bay windows on either side with 12-pane sashes, and a three-light sliding sash window at the right end. The first floor has eight-pane sashes in flush wooden architraves. The main range has a stepped and cogged brick eaves cornice, while the extension features a stepped and dentilled brick eaves cornice. The right gable and the extension have brick coped and tumbled gables, while the left gable is tile-coped and rendered.

Inside, there are a pair of 18th to early 19th century arched alcoves with keyed architraves in the passage on the left side of the ground floor. A broach-stopped chamfered beam in the central room on the ground floor has a mortise for a post, indicating former timber framing. The roof has not been investigated.
