Description
Horkstow House is a house dating from the mid to late 18th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a slate roof. The house has a double-depth plan, featuring a central entrance hall extending to the front. It presents as two storeys high and three bays wide, demonstrating a symmetrical design. The main entrance features a six-fielded-panel door, the top two panels glazed, set within an architrave surmounted by a plain fanlight contained within a brick round arch with a keyed detail. A late 19th or early 20th century round-arched hood with brackets covers the entrance. Original four-pane sash windows are found throughout, set within flush wooden architraves that project slightly, with rubbed brick flat arches and projecting cills. A stepped and cogged brick eaves cornice runs along the roofline. Brick end stacks are present. Pairs of twelve-pane attic sliding sashes are set within the left and right gables. The interior includes an open well staircase with a closed string, a moulded handrail, column-on-vase balusters with square knops, and a later ornate newel. Arched alcoves with fluted pilasters and keyed architraves are found in the ground floor on the left side, while the ground floor to the right features fielded-panel dado with a moulded dado rail.
