Description
Church House is a house dating from the early to mid-18th century, with a later 18th to 19th-century rear extension and 19th-century alterations. The roof was rebuilt in the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and has a concrete tile roof. The building has a T-shaped plan, featuring a central entrance hall with two rooms and a rear kitchen extension. It stands two storeys high and has three symmetrical bays.
The house has a plinth and a flight of seven stone steps leading to a 19th-century panelled door set in an architrave, which is topped by an overlight with 20th-century Gothick-style glazing. The doorcase features pilasters that support a plain entablature, a moulded cornice, and a hood. The cellar has 12-pane sliding sashes beneath segmental brick arches, while the ground floor has 16-pane sashes in beaded frames, complete with projecting stucco cills and painted rubbed brick flat arches that feature projecting keystones. The first floor has similar sashes with shallower arches. There are 20th-century end stacks.
Inside, there is a good open well staircase with a boldly-moulded ramped handrail and balusters in a column-on-vase-and-bulb style with square knops. The interior also includes moulded six-fielded-panel doors in architraves, panelled window shutters, and elliptically-arched brick cellars with segmental-arched fireplaces.
