Description

The pillar fountain, located 50 metres south of Woodbine Cottage on Ashby Road in Ticknall, is a Grade II listed structure. It was manufactured by Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd of Kilmarnock and erected in 1914 at the direction of Sir Vauncey Harpur-Crewe of Calke Abbey. The fountain features a fluted cast iron cylindrical column topped with a moulded dome. It includes a tap lever handle, a lion mask surround at the tap outlet, and an integral bucket platform at the base. The design, which is known as Kennedy's patent, is a self-closing, anti-freezing pillar fountain that dates back to the late 19th century. This fountain is part of a fresh water supply system for the village of Ticknall, which is associated with the Harpur-Crewe estate, and there are 16 other similar fountains that still exist. The fountains were supplied with water by gravity from a reservoir that was filled by a well using a wind-pump.
