Description
The Former Friends Meeting House and School at Toadhole Furnace, built in 1743, is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with gritstone dressings and features slate roofs. The building consists of a single-storey meeting house to the east and a two-storey school house to the west, separated by a flight of stone steps. The meeting house has a two-light flush mullion window with 20th-century leaded lights on the east side, and a quoined, flush doorcase on the west side, which includes an inscribed lintel that reads 'Matthew Hopkinson 1743'. The west gable wall features another two-light flush mullion window and steps leading up to a plain doorcase with a plank door. Inside, there is a gallery located to the west. The school house has a lower profile with a four-centred arch and a quoined doorcase on the west gable wall, and above it are two glazing bar sashes in flush surrounds.
