Description

Amber Mill Bridge is a single-span skew underbridge that crosses Shirland Road. It was built around 1836 to 1840 for the North Midland Railway, designed by George and Robert Stephenson along with Frederick Swanwick.

The bridge is made from coursed, squared, quarry-faced Derbyshire gritstone, featuring ashlar dressings and a red brick soffit laid in English bond. It has a single segmental arch constructed of rusticated, V-jointed, tooled voussoirs, which also serve as quoins for the soffit. The arch soffit is made of skew-set red brick, which springs from a serrated sandstone course that runs along the top of each impost band. The walling below consists of coursed, squared, quarry-faced stone. The impost bands are tooled with drip grooves along their lower edges and extend onto the abutments, which terminate at the wing walls. These wing walls are raked and splayed to meet the abutments at an angle above the impost band and curve below. A bold roll moulding with a tooled finish runs above the arch and continues along the wing walls, ending at low octagonal stone piers. The shallow ashlar parapet is topped with 20th-century steel railings.
