SK 35 NE PARISH OF SHIRLAND & HIGHAM BELPER ROAD 4/33 (East Side) 14-5-75 Furnace House GV II

House. 1751, completely restored in 1970s. Coursed squared sandstone. Gritstone dressings and quoins of long and short work, slightly raised to form corner pilasters. Shallow plinth. Continuous plain band to first floor. Coved eaves band. Plain tile roof. Moulded stone coped gables with moulded kneelers. Brick gable end stacks. Three storeys, double pile plan, two bays. Moulded central doorcase with C20 door. To either side, 2-light, square sectioned mullion windows in raised plain surrounds. Above, two similar. Between, over door, circular stone plaque with moulded hood inscribed 'William and Hannah Hopkinson 1751'. Over, to eaves, two similar but shallower windows to those below. All fenestration C20 leaded lights. To east, single storey C20 addition with large, full height windows. To rear, mullion and transomed stair window. Original dog-leg staircase in situ.
