Description
Furnace House is a house built in 1751 and completely restored in the 1970s. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with gritstone dressings and quoins featuring long and short work, slightly raised to form corner pilasters. The house has a shallow plinth and a continuous plain band at the first floor level. It features a coved eaves band and a plain tile roof, with moulded stone coped gables and moulded kneelers. There are brick gable end stacks. The building is three storeys high with a double pile plan and two bays.
The central doorcase is moulded and contains a 20th-century door. On either side of the door are 2-light, square sectioned mullion windows set in raised plain surrounds. Above the door, there are two similar windows and a circular stone plaque with a moulded hood, inscribed 'William and Hannah Hopkinson 1751'. Above this, at the eaves, are two shallower windows similar to those below. All the windows feature 20th-century leaded lights.
To the east, there is a single-storey 20th-century addition with large, full-height windows. At the rear, there is a mullion and transomed stair window, and the original dog-leg staircase remains in place.
