Description
The Ault Hucknall War Memorial is located on a small green at the junction of three roads near Stainsby Mill, which is also a Grade II-listed building. The memorial stands approximately 3 meters tall and is constructed from Stancliffe stone sourced from Darley Dale. It features an obelisk that rises from a shallow cornice atop a square plinth, which is set on a square base with three steps. The area around the memorial, which was previously railed, is now gravelled and enclosed by a chain suspended from nine timber posts.
On the south face of the obelisk, there is an inscription that reads "THE/ GLORIOUS DEAD/ 1914 – 1918," while the east face bears the inscription "THE/ GLORIOUS DEAD/ 1939 – 1945." The plinth includes dedicatory inscriptions and the names of those commemorated: on the south face, it states "ERECTED IN GRATEFUL AND LOVING MEMORY/ TO THE BRAVE MEN OF AULT HUCKNALL/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR" followed by 14 names; the north face lists 18 names with the inscription "THEIR NAMES SHALL ENDURE FOR EVER"; and the east face includes 7 names. All inscriptions are incised and filled with black paint.
