Description

Fishtoft War Memorial is located within a fenced area to the south-east of Fishtoft Playing Fields, next to Fishtoft Road. It is made of local Clipsham stone and features a spired obelisk topped with a cross, resembling other war memorials created by the same masons at Stickney and East Kirkby.

The memorial is set on a concrete platform with an octagonal two-stepped base. There is an additional prism-shaped stone on the southern side for the Second World War inscription. From the base rises a four-sided plinth with a canted top, supporting the obelisk. The obelisk has a square base with octagonal columns at each corner, each topped with an elaborate foliate capital. These columns support a moulded arch that creates a blind arcade on each side of the plinth. Above this is a tapering four-sided spire, which is finished with a foliate capital and a plain Latin cross.

The memorial lists the names of those who died in the First World War on the southern face, inscribed in black lettering, along with those who served and returned on the other three faces. The southern face reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD &/ IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THOSE WHO LAID/ DOWN THEIR LIVES IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918/ (11 NAMES)/ WOUNDED AND DISABLED/ (6 NAMES)/ “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS/ FRIENDS.” The other three faces include the inscription: "IN/ HONOUR OF THOSE WHO/ ALSO SERVED (NAMES)." The Second World War inscription states: "ALSO TO THOSE WHO MADE THE/ SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE SECOND/ WORLD WAR 1939-1945/ (7 NAMES)."

Additionally, a wrought iron basket is attached to the base on the eastern side of the memorial.
