Description
The Freiston War Memorial is situated in the churchyard of the Church of St James, which is a Grade I listed building, and is near the scheduled and Grade II-listed 14th-century churchyard cross shaft. Positioned in the north-west corner of the churchyard and facing the road, the memorial is enclosed by wrought iron railings. It is constructed from grey Cumberland granite and takes the form of a Celtic cross, resting on a concrete platform with a square, three-stepped base and a tapered square plinth that features a double rolled top.
The cross shaft is square in shape and is adorned with intricate knotwork and five bosses carved in relief on the front face of both the cross head and shaft, while the other sides remain plain. The front of the memorial bears an inscription in black lettering that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF/ GOD AND IN/ LASTING MEMORY/ OF THE MEN FROM/ THIS PARISH WHO/ SACRIFICED THEIR/ LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918." The names of the 13 men who lost their lives in the First World War are inscribed on the plinth, along with the phrase “THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE” below. The top step of the base is inscribed with "1939 - 1945," and the names of the six men who died in the Second World War are listed on the second step.
The memorial is safeguarded from the road by hooped metal railings that feature spear and fleur de lis heads on the vertical bars and dog rails. The standards of the railings are supported by backstays and topped with scrolled finials.
