Description

Old School is a former school building, now serving as a village hall. It was founded in 1665 and underwent extensions and alterations in 1878 and the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings, featuring a raised brick coped tumbled gable on the left and a moulded kneeler, topped with fishscale tiled roofs. It has an L-plan layout and is a single storey with an altered four-bay front. The front includes a brick plinth and a band that rises over a formal central door, flanked by windows in the Fen Artisan Mannerist style. A dogtooth eaves course adds detail to the roofline.

The central 19th-century cross mullioned window is flanked by single three-light mullioned windows, which have ashlar surrounds and are partially original. The windows feature latticed cast iron casements, with shallow fixed lights above. To the left, there is a lower 19th-century single bay extension, also with latticed casements. On the right, a slightly advanced gabled bay from 1878 contains a triple mullioned window. The left-hand gable displays a shield bearing the date of 1659. At the rear, a projecting chimney stack features a 19th-century octagonal ashlar stack, flanked by single two and three-light mullioned windows that match those at the front. The rear range is dated 1878 in raised brickwork. Originally, the school was for boys and was endowed by Anthony Pinchbeck, a yeoman of Butterwick.
