Description
The Butterwick War Memorial Obelisk is situated next to the churchyard path, immediately south of the Church of St Andrew, which is a Grade I-listed building. The memorial is enclosed within a square kerbed area that is surfaced with green glass chippings. It features an obelisk made of polished red Aberdeen granite, resting on a square stone base. Above this base is a three-stage pedestal, also in granite, with each step having a chamfered edge. The obelisk itself has a four-sided, tapering shaft that culminates in a pyramidal top.
On the upper stage of the base, the western and southern faces are inscribed with incised lettering that is painted in silver. The main inscription is identical on both sides and reads: "ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF BUTTERWICK TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM THIS VILLAGE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR (1914-1918)."
