Description
The High Etherley War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Cuthbert, which is also a listed building, to the west of the church tower. This memorial takes the shape of a tall granite obelisk that is square in plan and rises from the top of a pedestal with a pediment. The pedestal is set on two sandstone steps and is surrounded by a low square kerb.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the pedestal reads “VICTORY THROUGH SACRIFICE” followed by “IN HONOUR AND TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF ETHERLEY, TOFT HILL, MORLEY, AND WINDMILL, WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR 1914 – 1918.” The east face of the pedestal lists the names of those who died in the First World War, concluding with the phrase “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.” On the west face, beneath the dates 1939 – 45, are the names of those who died in the Second World War, with two names appearing on the pedestal foot.
