Description

The former parish school, now serving as a parish hall, dates back to 1833 and was funded by Henry Stobart, a coalowner. It was extended in 1869. The building is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, a plinth, and quoins, topped with a Welsh slate roof, and is designed in the Tudor style.

It is a single-storey structure with five bays and a long right extension, featuring a set-back left wall. The symmetrical main block includes a central gabled porch with a boarded door that has elaborate iron hinges, set within a chamfered segmental-headed surround. Above the door, there is a stepped dripmould that contains a blocked 2-light window over a panel displaying the date. The gable has a coped parapet on a string and a gabled bellcote.

Flanking the main entrance are 4-light windows under dripmoulds, while the outer bays project under gables and feature stepped 4-light windows with transoms for the inner lights. Each gable peak has cross-shaped vents. The blank right extension has a double door at the left end, which is set under a flat stone lintel. The low-pitched roofs are supported by moulded kneelers, and there are two low ridge chimneys, one truncated on the left and the other with double-chamfered coping.

To the left, there is a high yard wall that is set back and features a gable over a boarded door in a deeply-chamfered surround, topped with flat stone coping.
