Description
The Layham War Memorial is a war memorial erected in 1919, located in the churchyard of the Church of St Andrew in Layham, Suffolk.
It is made of pale grey granite, with a smooth-faced body and rock-faced lower steps at the base. The memorial is prominently positioned at the center of the village burial ground, directly across the road from the Church of St Andrew, which is also a listed building.
The memorial features a wheel cross atop a tapered shaft, set on a deep tapered plinth that stands on a three-stepped base. The main inscription on the east face of the plinth reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY AND IN COMMEMORATION OF THE SERVICES OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FOUGHT IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The names of the fallen are inscribed on the north and south faces of the plinth, while a further inscription on the west face notes "1939 – 1945 (NAMES)."
