Description
The gazebo and garden walls at Hardwick Hall, built between 1590 and 1597, are likely the work of architect Robert Smythson. These structures enclose the gardens in two rectangular areas and are constructed from sandstone ashlar. The walls feature chamfered copings topped with distinctive finials that create a crenellated appearance. To the west, there is a polygonal lodge, and a triangular banqueting house that resembles a bastion. The entrance includes a chamfered round arch and a central section that resembles a square tower, adorned with polygonal finials and intricate strapwork cresting.
