Description
The range of outbuildings and stables, along with the walls enclosing a courtyard to the south of Hardwick Hall, dates from the 17th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with sandstone dressings and features stone slate roofs with stone coped gables. The structure consists of irregular one and two storey ranges that form the south side of a large enclosed courtyard.
At the eastern end, there is a cart hovel with six openings separated by stop-chamfered piers, which have simple square bases and capitals. There is also a shed at the eastern end with plank doors. Moving west, a recessed symmetrical two-bay unit features a central doorway with a chamfered ashlar surround and a segmental relieving arch, along with a plank door. This doorway is flanked by 3-light recessed and chamfered mullioned windows.
The return wall to the right includes a pair of blind round-arched entrances with windows set in. A projecting six-bay range to the west has plain doorways and two tiers of two and three light mullioned windows, with the upper windows being smaller than the lower ones. To the right, there is a round-arched opening with a stepped gable leading into the courtyard.
The principal range to the west was under scaffolding at the time of writing, showcasing various doorways and mullioned windows. A central clock turret is present, consisting of two square stages; the lower stage houses the clock and has a pyramidal roof that narrows to the upper bell-stage, which features an ogee roof and a weather vane.
