Description
The engine house, saw mill, and attached chimney at Hardwick Saw Mill were built in 1860, possibly by S. Rollinson. The structure is made of coursed squared sandstone with sandstone dressings and features a stone slate roof with stone coped gables. It has a rectangular plan and stands two storeys tall. The gabled west elevation consists of two bays, with a round-arched entrance that has a plain ashlar surround and a pair of plank doors. To the left of the entrance is a single doorway with a shallowly arched lintel. Above, there are two 2-light chamfered mullion windows with diamond glazing, and a single slit window is located in the gable. The south elevation includes three 2-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows. Attached to the east side is a tall circular stone chimney, which features a moulded band and cornice at the top.
