Description

The East Kirkby War Memorial is located in an oval paved area surrounded by a low brick wall with stone capping and wrought iron railings, situated at the crossroads in the center of the village. Constructed from Portland stone, the memorial takes the form of a spired obelisk topped with a Celtic cross, resembling other war memorials by the same masons at Fishtoft and Stickney.

It features an octagonal two-stepped base, upon which stands an octagonal plinth with a canted top and carved broach stops. The obelisk itself is square in plan, adorned with round columns at each corner, each topped with elaborate foliate capitals that support a moulded arch, creating a blind arcade on each side. Above this, a tapering four-sided spire rises, decorated with rope twist motifs at each edge, culminating in a foliate capital and the Celtic cross. A stone vase is placed on the southern side of the base.

The names of those who died in the First World War are inscribed in black lettering on the southern panel of the obelisk, while the names of those who served and returned are listed on the remaining three sides. The main dedicatory inscription reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR 1914-1918 KILLED IN ACTION" followed by eight names. Below this, the years "1935-1945" are inscribed with two names listed underneath. Additionally, the base of the panel states, "THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS OF EAST KIRKBY AND HAGNABY." The other panels are inscribed with "TO THE LASTING HONOUR OF THOSE WHO SERVED 1914-1918" followed by names.
