Description
The Cottage at Shipley Gate Lock is a building that originally consisted of two cottages but has now been combined into one. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The structure is made of rendered brick with a pantiled roof that has a bell shape at the eaves, and it features rendered gable stacks, with the one on the east side being external. There is a slate roof on a single-storey projection that includes a gable stack on the north side.
The building is two storeys high and has two bays. On the north elevation, there is a 20th-century window in a segment-headed opening to the west and another 20th-century window to the east. In between these windows is a gabled projection, which was likely used as a kitchen or wash-house; it has a plain sash window in the center of its west face and a 20th-century door on its east face. Attached to the south side of the west face is a 20th-century lean-to porch. Above this porch, there are two horizontal sliding sashes with glazing bars. The south elevation, which faces the canal, is blank. This cottage was probably built as a residence for lock keepers of the Erewash Canal, which was constructed in 1779.
