Description
Double Locks Cottage is a two-storey, three-bay cottage built of red brick, which is now rendered and painted, and features a plain tiled roof with a raised gable brick stack. The cottage has a two-room plan and includes an attached lean-to, originally a shed, on the east gable end that was added in 1789, as well as a lean-to addition at the rear. The windows are small-paned timber casements, although some have been replaced in the 20th century.
The north (front) elevation of the cottage is symmetrical and faces the canal. It has a central doorway with a plank door and an open timber-gabled porch, which appears to be a later addition. Flanking the entrance are two windows, with three additional windows on the first floor, all featuring segmental-arched heads. The date '1784' is inscribed above the central window, and there is also a segmental-arched attic window at the west end. On the far left (east) side, the north wall of the lean-to has a wide doorway that has been blocked.
At the rear of the cottage, there is a small brick building with a pantile roof and a brick stack on the south gable end. This building is said to have a plank door and small windows, with a stone-flagged floor inside. It is suggested that this may have served as the sentinel box for the first lock keeper.
