Description
The former coal pens near Canal Cottages are 19th-century structures made of limestone. They consist of a series of walled enclosures with curved corners designed for easy access by carts. The enclosure walls are primarily constructed from coursed and dressed limestone, with some sections of ashlar and stone copings. There are two shutes on the canal-facing (north) side, featuring stone sills. These shutes originally had timber boards that were hinged at the bottom to allow coal to be unloaded by wheelbarrow from barges onto planks leading into the pen. To the left (east) of these openings, there is a gateway with chamfered jambs and a late-19th-century wrought-iron gate.
