Description
The lock, lock gates, and basin at Shipley Gate were built in 1779 by engineer John Varley, with later alterations and additions. Constructed from sandstone and red brick, the structure features metal and wooden gates. The lock chamber has gates at both ends and an attached basin that curves to the north on the west side. The sandstone chamber includes wooden gates reinforced with metal. Each gate is equipped with wooden balance beams, metal handrails, and rack and pinion mechanisms. There are semi-circular footholds and bollards on either side of both sets of gates. Additionally, the lock chamber has a metal stepladder on the north side. This structure is part of the Erewash Canal.
