Description
8A Victoria Street is a house and adjoining workshop, now serving as the D. H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum. It was built around 1875 and is constructed of brick with a slate roof, featuring dentillated eaves and a single gable stack. The building has two storeys plus garrets and consists of three bays in a single range. The windows are mainly margin light sashes.
On the street front, to the left, there is a plain gated carriage opening. To the right, there is a shop window with a plain surround and hood, followed by a door with an overlight. Above this, there are three sashes. The south gable has a door with a segmental head, and above it, there is a sash window leading to the garrets. The rear of the building has, to the left, two sashes on each floor, three of which have segmental heads. To the right, beyond the carriage opening, there is a sash window and a door. Above to the left, there is a blocked opening and a sash window.
The interior features fittings and furnishings typical of the late 19th century. The kitchen includes a plain ashlar fireplace with a working range, a stone sink, and gas lighting. This building is notable as the birthplace of the author D. H. Lawrence.
