Description
28 Garden Road is a miner's cottage, now serving as a study centre, built around 1880. The structure is made of brick and features a slate roof. It has a chamfered plinth, a dentillated band at the first floor, and eaves. The building is two storeys tall with garrets and has a single bay, forming the gabled end of a row of similar cottages.
The windows are casements with chamfered segmental heads. On the south gable, there is a casement on each floor, with the windows decreasing in size as they ascend. The west side has a central lean-to brick porch that includes two casements and a door positioned at the right angle. There is also a casement in the return angle to the left, flanked by single casements, and above this, three small casements. The rear features a door with a segmental head, flanked by single casements, with a casement on each floor above.
Notably, D. H. Lawrence lived in this cottage from 1887 to 1891, and it is mentioned in his novel "Sons and Lovers."
