Description

Nos. 5, 7, and 9 Bridle Smith Gate are shops with offices above, built in 1895 by Gilbert Smith Doughty of Nottingham for Smart & Brown, furnishers. The building is designed in the Jacobean Revival Style, constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and slate roofs featuring coped gables. It has five storeys plus attics and a six-window range. The ground floor includes two late 20th-century shopfronts and, to the right, a round-arched doorway faced in polished granite. Above, there are six showroom windows with two lights and segmental heads, accompanied by a strapwork frieze. The three upper floors are divided into two identical sections, each with three windows. Each section features a central cross casement window with three lights, flanked by similar two-light windows. The fourth-floor windows follow the same arrangement, with moulded segmental heads and ashlar keystones. Above these, there is an ashlar entablature, followed by a similar arrangement of windows with glazing bar toplights. At the top, two very tall, ornate gables are adorned with pairs of finials between them. Each gable features a large round window with a terracotta surround and keystones, topped by curved ashlar gables with pediments and finials.
